Positive action for England’s chalk rivers
The Chalk River Project was created to raise awareness of the decline of these rare rivers—and to share the work already being done to restore and protect them.
WHY THE PROJECT MATTERS
Much of the attention given to England’s chalk rivers focuses on pollution, damage and decline.
Those challenges are real, but far less is heard about the dedicated people and organisations working tirelessly to restore these remarkable rivers and protect them for future generations.

Through documentary film, inspiring stories and trusted information, we aim to shine a light on the people making a difference, share their knowledge and encourage more people to understand, value and care for England’s internationally important chalk rivers.

This is a story of hope
Across the country, individuals, charities, conservation organisations, landowners and local communities are working together to restore habitats, improve water quality and bring these extraordinary rivers back to life. By celebrating their achievements and sharing their experiences, we hope to inspire others to become part of the solution and help secure a brighter future for England’s chalk rivers.
The Project so far
From an idea to a growing project
Since its launch in October 2025, The Chalk River Project has moved from an initial idea to funded filming, new partnerships and a growing network of contributors.
October 2025
The project begins
The Chalk River Project is launched in response to the continuing decline of England’s chalk rivers, with the aim of raising awareness and sharing the work being done to protect them.
November 2025 onwards
From idea to action
Initial funding is secured. Conservation organisations, scientists, landowners, regulators, artists and anglers begin contributing their knowledge and experiences.
2026
Stories from Hampshire
Planning, interviews and filming take place across Hampshire, while the website begins sharing the project’s progress, resources and stories.
December 2027
The documentary premieres
2028 ONWARDS
